EICR and emergency light testing for a commercial unit

Commercial units are busy places, and the electrics take a constant beating. Add emergency lighting into the mix, and you have two critical systems that need regular testing to stay compliant and safe.

On this job, we carried out an Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) and emergency light testing, providing the client with a clear picture of the unit’s electrical condition and the performance of the emergency lighting throughout the building.

EICR testing for fixed wiring safety

An EICR is a detailed inspection and test of the fixed electrical installation. It focuses on the parts you do not see every day, things like distribution boards, protective devices, earthing and bonding, and the condition of wiring and accessories.

The goal is simple. Confirm the installation is safe for continued use, and identify anything that needs attention before it becomes a fault, a risk, or a disruption to normal operations.

Emergency lighting testing for compliance and safety

Emergency lighting is there for the moments you really do not want to think about, such as power cuts, faults, or an evacuation. When it is needed, it has to work.

Emergency light testing checks that fittings operate correctly, remain illuminated for the required duration, and are positioned and maintained to support safe exit routes and key areas within the unit.

Why combining these checks makes sense

Doing the EICR and emergency light testing together is efficient and practical. You get one coordinated visit, a consistent set of findings, and a clearer picture of the building’s overall electrical safety.

It also helps reduce disruption. Instead of multiple appointments, you can plan access once and get everything checked in a structured way.

What the client receives

At the end of the visit, the client receives the EICR documentation, the emergency lighting test results, and any observations requiring action. If anything is flagged, it can be prioritised sensibly, with clear recommendations rather than vague concerns.

Next steps

If your commercial unit is due for an EICR, or you are not sure when the emergency lighting was last tested, it is worth getting it booked in. Regular checks support compliance, reduce risk, and help you avoid the surprise failures that always happen at the worst time.
